What You Need To Know About Addiction

Posted on 05. Jul, 2013 by in Alcohol & Drug Abuse

Myths and misconceptions about addiction can stand in the way of recovery.  When you have the facts, it can lead you to a better life.

First, if you are addicted to drugs, it is not a personal failing, a sign of weakness, or a choice.  Anyone who abuses mind-altering substances can become addicted.  Rather than being ashamed or embarrassed over something you can no longer control, you need to acknowledge that you have a legitimate health issue.

Second, even if your willpower can help you avoid drugs, it is not the solution.  While drug abuse may have been the initial problem, it has led to a variety of other problems in your life.  From conflicts in your relationships, to having no solid plans for the future, abstinence alone will not solve your problems.

Third, while peer support can be useful, recovery requires professional help.  You can receive the counseling you need to begin recovery in a drug rehab facility.  In a pleasant environment with other recovering addicts, you can start to develop a stable, drug-free life.

A rehabilitation program will not force you to stay clean.  Instead, it provides the skills and experiences you need to make living clean your own decision.  You will see how much better life can be without drugs.

Drugs can be something you did in the past, and do not want to do again.  A rehab program can be the beginning of a new life.  You can be happier, healthier, and free from drug addiction.
