Things You Can Do To Prevent A Relapse

Posted on 08. Jul, 2013 by in Alcohol & Drug Abuse, Sober Living

Many people end up using drugs and alcohol again after they leave rehab. In fact, most studies suggest that the relapse rates range from 50 to 70 percent. That is why relapse prevention is such an important topic. Fortunately, there are a number of things that you can do to prevent yourself from having a relapse.

You may want to consider joining Alcoholics Anonymous or another support group. There was a study done that involved people who attended weekly Alcoholics Anonymous meetings for one year. The results of the study showed that 90 percent of people who attended the weekly meetings were able to avoid a relapse.

Attending group meetings will allow you to identify with people who are fighting the same battles. The friends that you meet in your support group can motivate you to stay on the right track.

You will also need to make sure that you avoid temptations.  You should stay away from nightclubs, bars and wild parties. You should also avoid hanging out with people who drink excessively or use drugs. You may have to cut ties with a-lot of people, but it will be worth it in the end.

Furthermore, managing stress is an important part of relapse prevention. Many people turn to drugs and alcohol because they are under a-lot of stress and do not know how to handle it.  Exercising is one of the most effective things that you can do to manage stress. You also want to make sure that you get adequate amounts of rest.
