Supporting Your Teen After Drug Abuse Treatment

Posted on 17. Apr, 2014 by in Alcohol & Drug Abuse

Finding out that your teen has a drug abuse problem is a shock for any parent, but there are certain steps that need to be taken when this unthinkable situation arises. Once you have confirmed your child’s drug problem through drug testing, it’s important that you place them on the path to recovery with drug abuse treatment

The recovery process doesn’t end at the conclusion of drug rehab, though. It’s important that you still support your teen’s addiction recovery after they return from drug abuse treatment, too.

Here are some tips for supporting your teen after their drug abuse treatment.

Providing Support to Teens After Drug Abuse Treatment

Understand Their Treatment Plan

It’s important for parents to be on the same page as their teen’s drug abuse treatment providers once they are released from rehab. If the drug treatment was judicially-ordered, then there may be very specific guidelines that parents and teens must follow upon their release. Even if entrance to rehab was voluntary, though, parents should still follow the recommendations of the treatment provider, as it will make the recovery process run more smoothly.

Open Communication Lines

Creating open communication lines with your teen is also a key part of supporting their recovery after drug abuse treatment. Your teen needs to feel as though they can confide in you no matter what, such as if they are feeling they might relapse or if they have a friend pressuring them to use drugs. It’s important that your teen feels listened to and not judged, or they might shut down and refuse to communicate with you, which would only hinder their recovery process.

Allow Social Time – But Be Mindful

Your teen will need the support of friends and family members as they continue their addiction recovery after leaving rehab. Forbidding them from social gatherings isn’t a great idea. However, this doesn’t mean you should allow them to jump right back in to their old social routines. You should be aware of who they’re spending time with, when, and what they’re doing. Establish rules about when they can be out and how often they have to contact you when they’re not at home. Check in with their friends’ parents to verify their whereabouts. And be sure that your teens aren’t falling back into old drug abuse habits with their friends.
