Drug Addiction Can Affect the Whole Family

Posted on 12. Sep, 2013 by in Alcohol & Drug Abuse

Drug addiction is so disruptive and powerful it can affect every aspect of a family desperate to provide emotional support for the family member struggling with the grip of addiction. Such disruptions can feel overwhelming to a family reeling from the chaos drug addiction can cause. It is no wonder then that family issues and drug addiction often go hand in hand. Family issues surrounding drug addiction can often reach beyond the nuclear family, affecting aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents. Recognizing the issues that arise in families struggling from the effects of drug addiction can help a family identify their problems and find solutions.

Children are particularly susceptible to the impact of a family member battling a drug addiction. Some kids go to great lengths to remain in denial over a parent’s drug addition while others seek to take care of their parents at a level that is not age appropriate. If these issues are not treated, the children might face additional problems later in their life that stem from their childhood. Spouses or partners of the drug addict often develop problems trusting the addict. Other family members may seek to distance themselves from the addict or feel embarrassed by the addict’s actions.

Do not hesitate to seek help for you or someone you love who is struggling with addiction. Treatment is available to help your loved one and your family. Family issues and drug addiction are two problems treatment providers are trained to address. Just as addiction can be overcome with the right treatment, the family issues caused by the addiction can also be healed.
