5 Common Teen Addictions and Their Traits

Posted on 20. May, 2015 by in Alcohol & Drug Abuse

Studies have shown a rise in teen addictions. Though they may not all be related to substance abuse, they can have negative effects on the child’s life. Below are five of the common teen addictions and their traits.

1. Prescription Drugs

Many teens have found prescription drugs to be a convenient alternative to traditional drugs and often experiment with the different prescriptions in an attempt to get high. Common traits of a teen on prescription drugs include:

  • Drowsiness
  • Impulsive behavior
  • Confusion
  • Irregular breathing

2. Marijuana

The number of teens who openly use marijuana has greatly increased with recent legalizations. However, one blunt is known to possess the toxic effects of a whole pack of cigarettes. Some of the common traits, such as the smell, are easy to recognize, but there are other traits to look for, including:

  • Delayed response
  • Squinted eyes
  • Being dazed
  • hallucination

3. Alcohol

Over the years alcohol has remained one of the most common teen addictions. Studies have shown that though teens do not drink as often as adults, they are more prone to binge drink than adults. The smell of alcohol and drunkenness are dead giveaways; some key characteristics to look for include:

  • slurred speech
  • poor coordination
  • physical impairment

4. Sex

The average child is exposed to and is very knowledgeable of sexual activities as early as sixth grade. With them being at an age of discovery and them not fully understanding the concept of lifelong consequences, many teens engage in sexual acts. Some common things to look for include:

  • “sexting”
  • Pornography
  • Open intimate touching

5. Social Media

Many of the aforementioned addictions are charged by images and interactions through social mediums. There are not several traits to look for, but rather one particular trait, which is giving more attention to social media interaction over in-person communication.

By recognizing these addictions by their traits, parents can properly address the issues and assist children in overcoming these addictions. For more information and assistance, contact your local rehab resource.
